You know your garage has seen better days when it starts leaning so hard it doubles as a tool rack. That’s where we began in Part 1, tearing down that sad old structure and putting up a sturdy lumber shed to store our materials.
Now, let’s get to the part we’ve been looking forward to, our dream carport.
Designing a Carport That Fits Our Life (and Our Trucks)
Once we wrapped up the lumber shed, we were more than ready to give our vehicles a real home. In true Texas fashion, we designed a spacious three-bay carport that could easily handle our trucks, SUV, and all that oversized weather we’re used to.
Let’s be honest: squeezing into a too-tight parking spot after a long day on a dusty job site? No thanks. We knew we wanted something more than just a parking area.
This carport had to be:
- Solid and secure
- Built to withstand storms, sun, and time
- A structure that actually adds resale and curb appeal to our home
Mission Accomplished.
Adding a Door: The Small Change That Made a Big Difference
One of our favorite decisions in this build was cutting in a door from the house directly into the carport. Before this, we’d have to trek around the entire house just to get inside, often while juggling groceries in the rain.
Now? We park, step into the carport, and head straight into the house. It’s simple, but it changed everything about how we use the space. It’s safer, smarter, and just plain convenient.
The Breezeway That Pulled It All Together
To finish it off, DK built a breezeway roof connecting the carport to the house. And let me tell you, it’s the kind of feature you don’t know you need until you have it.
Not only does it keep us dry during Texas rainstorms, it also makes the whole project look and feel like a natural extension of our home. What used to be just a gravel driveway now feels like an intentional, beautiful part of our living space.
Check out these in-progress shots of the carport framing and breezeway. We’re still amazed at the transformation.
This carport didn’t just give our vehicles a place to park, it added function, protection, and serious value to our home. Whether you’re tackling a fixer-upper or just need more covered space, consider how a custom carport (with a few thoughtful extras) can totally change the way your home works for you.
That may be the nicest carport I’ve ever seen! I love the covered walkway!
Thank you
