Our First Major Project: Creating a Cost-Effective Screened-In Porch
When we set our sights on our fixer-upper overlooking the serene lake, we knew our first priority was to tackle a screened-in porch. It was essential for us to fully embrace our rural lifestyle without the annoyance of pesky insects.
This addition not only shielded us from bugs but also expanded our living area, enhancing our 1,100 square foot home. The breathtaking view served as a constant reminder of the potential this porch held in enriching our daily lives.
Getting Started on a Budget
One summer day, while enjoying the natural beauty surrounding us under a portable canopy, a sudden storm toppled it. Taking it as a sign, we promptly initiated our porch project. This unexpected event only fueled our determination to commence and actualize our plan. With enthusiasm and resolve, we compiled a list of cost-effective materials for the project. Our anticipation soared at the thought of having our very own screened-in sanctuary where we could unwind without interruptions.
Laying The Foundation
Taking the helm as the General Contractor, my husband meticulously mapped out the ideal spot for our porch. Leveraging his expertise, he positioned the piers to ensure a sturdy foundation. Digging holes and pouring concrete followed suit. With scaffolding in place, he commenced work on the perimeter beams and rafters. We couldn’t contain our excitement as the structure took shape.
He built scaffolding around the piers so he could start the perimeter beams and rafters.
The rafters are complete. Next the roof of the new porch was tied into the existing roof.
We were so excited to get some much needed shade over our sliding glass door. We felt like our house doubled in size. Next was getting the porch ready for shingles.
Framing and Flooring Completion
With the frame in place, we integrated floor joists and flooring to establish a robust base. Framing for the screen openings was meticulously executed, heightening our anticipation for the finished product.
Exterior Finishing Touches
After weeks of diligent effort, our screened-in porch was finally complete. A bottom skirt was installed below the floor, and screens were fitted to shield us from insects. The addition instantly provided much-needed shade and expanded our living space, making it feel like our home had doubled in size.
Ready to Enjoy with Fire in the Wood Burning Stove
With a fire crackling in the wood-burning stove, our porch became a welcoming retreat, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. The stove, repurposed from generous friends, not only adds warmth but also contributes to the cozy ambiance. Utilizing leftover cedar planks, we crafted planter boxes, enhancing the exterior with greenery.
We had some extra cedar planks left over from a jobsite and we made planter boxes and put it on the outside of the porch. This way we can enjoy watching the plants grow while we are sitting on the porch.
As we sit on our porch, enveloped by nature’s tranquility and the soothing sounds of the lake, we’re filled with gratitude for completing our inaugural project. Not only has the screened-in porch increased our home’s value, but it has also bestowed upon us a serene space to unwind and cherish each other’s company. Join us as we embark on more remodeling endeavors, transforming our fixer-upper into a haven of comfort and style.
